The Massimo home was near the book industry district in Rome, where the workshops of manuscript copiers and book dealers were located. These workers greeted the new art of typography with enthusiasm, and printed books spread rapidly as merchants and bankers saw the potential for profit that they held. In the space of ten years, around 160,000 books were printed in Rome. At first, typographers sought to reproduce the work of professional copyists as faithfully as possible, since their books were to be read by a public that had never known anything but manuscripts. Customers who had had access to books before wanted something that they were familiar with, and refused at first to do without the rich colours and elaborate capital letters of the illuminated manuscript. After printing, therefore, the production of the text was completed by the illuminators.
