In summary, what is the underlying message of this book? Since the link between food and exploration has been evident for centuries, 1,000 foods is as much an investigation of the world and its people as it is a culinary journey. That's because there is a very strong link between food and exploring the far reaches of the planet, 'For me, food helps define a place,' says Sheraton, who says that each place in the world is individual because its cooking styles and dishes are not found anywhere else, that no two culinary traditions are alike. This doesn't just apply to the taste. Sheraton adds that she wants to experience the way a dish is served and how it appears on the plate, whether it is simplistic and casual or much more elaborate. She then goes on to make a comment that I find terrifically interesting, "I really think that in a world that's becoming more homogenous, if you can find traditional foods in their country of origin ... it's as important as looking at a cathedral, a palace or ancient statues'. Furthermore, in an increasingly globallised world where populations are migrating to distant countries, Sheraton says that food can become a daily part of life in a new country, and help migrants keep their heritage alive.
