Since the 1970s, the New Zealand cinematographer has become a much more significant figure. In marked parallel with existing artistic traditions such as painting, the vast majority of New Zealand films have been set in the countryside or wilderness, exploring ideas of solitude, isolation and silence. Film-makers in New Zealand have also had to respond to one distinctive quality of the country’s environment. As cinematographer Donny Duncan explains, ‘...if it’s full sunshine on a clear day, and you wave your meter in the sun and then take a reading in the full shadow, the difference in the two readings is probably more extreme than anywhere on the planet.’ This unique contrast in the degree of brightness, which frequently occurs in New Zealand, has created a particular set of difficulties for the local cinematographer.

A number of other developments have contributed to a boom in New Zealand’s film industry in recent decades. Early in his career the cinematographer Graeme Cowley became frustrated at the inadequacy of the production equipment available, and the problems of obtaining items such as a zoom lens or special tripod. Cowley came up with the idea of setting up businesses that would hire out film equipment, and eventually this proved beneficial to the whole industry. Another aspect of the film-making process is the laboratory where the film is developed. Most productions tended to use the National Film Unit laboratory, which suffered from a rather poor reputation. However, after a change of management the situation improved markedly. One other element of New Zealand film-malting reflects the country’s wider social structure. Camera crews in other parts of the world can be rigidly hierarchical and sometimes do not function well as a result. New Zealand crews, however, tend to be much more communal and collaborative, allowing them to work together more productively, which is one reason so many films are now made in the country.
