There are a number of considerations when designing a whole colony of RoboBees, for instance, how to run thousands of autonomous robots with only a limited number of humans in charge. Imagine if every robot had an on/off switch — turning on 1,000 would be immensely time-consuming. Similar constraints apply to everything from cost to how the robots need to be kept in good working order with minimal effort. These challenges have motivated us to create the Kilobot system — a series of tiny robots, which are far more basic than the RoboBee in terms of their physical structure and range of movement. However, they can move by vibrating and they can communicate with other nearby Kilobots. We can use them to test which computer programming language works best and to discover how more sophisticated robots might interact with one another in the future — all useful information as we continue to develop the more advanced RoboBee. For example, we can ask the group to search for an item within an environment, then, once an individual Kilobot finds it, report where it is back to the group. We have also published the Kilobot design online for groups wanting to make their own, in the hope that people will comment on and contribute to the further development of robot design.
