E Graphologist Peter West claims that upward pointing arrows can represent a desire to succeed, for example, while arrows pointing in all directions may indicate an open mind. A person who doodles straight lines is often a blunt person who speaks his or her mind; noughts and crosses in a doodle may indicate a competitive person, and perfectionists may draw stars. Some people rarely doodle; Dr. West describes them as ‘precise, direct and controlled.’

D Like handwriting, doodling is sometimes analysed to give clues to the personality, although it must be said that handwriting analysis, known as graphology, is not universally accepted in the world of psychology. Those who do accept it agree that the details of a doodle are dependent on a person's cultural background and education. Handwriting is analysed by the size, shape and spacing of the letters; with doodles, it is the symbols and pictures that are important. “You can read a doodle like a book,” says Dr Ho. “Doodling is a creative outlet that reflects a person's state of mind. ”
