G Diane Stanbra got her idea for a new business after touring a new waterfront development in Auckland. One of the plans was for people to be able to sit on the grass after dark to enjoy a movie. Wouldn't it be great, she thought, if they could eat a picnic at the same time. With a full-time job at a software corporation, she had to work on the idea in her own time. On the first night, she produced eighty $15 picnic boxes and sold less than twenty. It might have been demoralising, but Stanbra says the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. It gave her the determination to carry on with the idea over that first unpredictable summer, during which the weather restricted trading to just nine days. She then took the sensible step of speaking to a business advisor at her bank. On the basis of this discussion, she raised her price to $25 and contracted a highly-regarded chef from the restaurant world to take over food preparation. Three years later, sales had reached a point where she could give up her other job and concentrate on growing the business. In the year after she went full-time, turnover increased nearly 200%, with weddings being a secondary growth area. These figures helped her win an award for best emerging small business.
