To see why hurricanes may be susceptible to human intervention, one must understand their nature and origins, urricanes grow as clusters of thunderstorms over the tropical oceans. These waters continuously provide heat and moisture to the atmosphere, producing warm, humid air above the sea surface. When this air rises, the water vapor in it condenses to form clouds and precipitation. Condensation releases heat - that is, the heat from the sun which evaporated the water from the ocean surface at the beginning of the process, This heat that is released makes the air more buoyant, causing it to ascend still higher. Eventually the tropical depression begins to organize and strengthen, creating the ‘eye’ - the calm central hub around which the hurricane spins. On reaching land, the hurricane's sustaining source of warm water is cut off, and this causes the storm to weaken rapidly.

The life cycle of hurricanes
第 34 题
Hurricanes begin life in the Tropics. lnitially, though, they take the form of groups of _____ Through the process called ____ , the water vapour in the air above the sea is turned into clouds and precipitation. The ____ that is given out in the process results in the air rising further. in time, the typical form of the hurricane is created - a powerful wind spinning round a still point which is known as the ____ . Hurricanes only begin to weaken when they pass over ____ This change occurs because the required source of moisture and heat is no longer present.
