C one of the teachers on the course is Stanislav shchukin, who spent 35 years with the Moscow Circus during its golden years. He is 70 now, but still a tough figure with the light step of the gymnast he was for three and a half decades. In Russia, circus has always been regarded as special rather than fringe, and this meant a number of perks: Shchukin's application to live in central Moscow was rubber-stamped. 'And as a circus, we always had the very best, 'he says, the best costumes and the best orchestra. 'His partner in the ring was an extremely thin man, and shchukin would always make a big display of counting the man's ribs to get a laugh out of the audience. This is important, he says, because humour is one of the three key elements of the circus. In order to highlight the others he tells the story of how he fell in love with the circus. He was a young man when he saw a lovely woman standing on the back of an elegant horse and he realised then that the circus needed displays of this kind of beauty in order to succeed. Then soon after, sitting in an audience that hardly dared breathe, he watched a man dancing on the high wire and saw how everyone in the crowd was captivated by the tightrope walker's courage, which according to Shchukin is the third essential characteristic that everyone wants to see at the circus.
