Work with a bonobo called Matata began in 1981, but Matata did not come alone. Six months earlier, she had kidnapped a newborn infant and kept it as her own. This was Kanzi. While Savage-Rumbaugh and her colleagues were working with Matata, Kanzi was allowed to play freely.
